Sadly there seems little point me dreaming up a new post title.
Following a week long stop in New York City, US Rihanna has returned to
Los Angeles, California, US following her little adventure in Europe
that involved Paris Fashion Week and a few concerts on Drake's "Stayed
There" tour. Obviously throughout this - and most of the time I've been
watching - Rihanna has found a way to convince herself that she's really
clever, we're really stupid and this has been an absolutely brilliant
idea. Now everybody has had a moment to step back and consider the
evidence it has become much harder for Rihanna to support that position.
As a result we are now in something of an emotionally unsettling period
for Rihanna.
On Saturday (22/3/14) Rihanna took to Twitter/Instagram to promote the
upcoming "Monster" mini-tour she is doing in August alongside Eminem.
Part of this involved a short video featuring a relatively famous clip
from the US show "Teen Mom 2" in which the star "Jenelle Evans" behaved
like a spoilt little brat by telling her lawyer that she couldn't attend
a Court date because she wanted to go to a Kesha concert. The video
then cut to footage of Rihanna being introduced as a guest on the UK
version of the show "X-Factor." The idea being to give the impression
that Jenelle Evans really wanted to go to the Rihanna and Eminem
concerts.
Taken at face value this video could be interpreted as Rihanna using
comedy to promote the Monster mini-tour while having a dig at Kesha.
After all there has been some tension between the two dating back to at
least October 2012 when Kesha falsely claimed that Rihanna would be
featuring on her new album.
However the video could also be interpreted as Rihanna highlighting how
stupid and arrogant she had been to join Drake on his tour in a sort of
apology. Obviously in those circumstances the lawyer featured in the
video would be the lawyer (wrongly) advising Rihanna that if she didn't
join up with Drake she would lose her case against Berdon LLP.
Finally the video could be interpreted as Rihanna trashing the Monster
mini-tour by making fun of it and hinting that she'd rather not bother.
Clearly I hope that the second interpretation was the one that Rihanna
was aiming for. However even if that is the case then Rihanna is
certainly not helping her cause through the lack of clarity. Instead it
would be much better for Rihanna to put out a statement making clear
that her relationship with Drake was faked in order to help boost ticket
sales for Drakes concerts. Rihanna would then apologise for misleading
her fans and assuring them that it won't happen again. If that is too
difficult perhaps Rihanna would like to add her name to this statement
by simply favouriting the Tweet. After all that has got to be preferable
to allowing the Drake debacle to taint the Monster mini-tour which has
probably got to be the only sensible thing Rihanna's signed up to all
year.
While I'm on the subject since Rihanna's departure from Drake's tour the
UK has been making a lot of noise about the Naomi Oni acid attack case.
When this story initially broke in January 2013 it was a UK response to
a Russian story about a similar acid attack on the artistic director of
the Bolshoi ballet. That was obviously Russia warning the US that there
was no point continuing with the Rihanna operation. Through the Oni
case the UK was also attempting to add an element of Islamic extremism
in Nigeria to the discussion.
However as the Oni case has progressed through the arrest, trial and
conviction of the attacker it has emerged that Oni was attacked by one
of her close female friends over some trivial and childish argument. As
such through the fresh publicity the UK is trying to promote discussion
about the fact that while members of Rihanna's core social group may
make for great personal friends they are not the sort of people Rihanna
should be taking career advice from. Leandra (@leleboo246) seems to be
coming under specific focus.
